As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many people have been vaccinated, boosted, and taken all the precautions they feel are necessary to stay healthy. Over the last three years, we’ve seen travel restrictions put in place, lifted, and put in place again. The ever-evolving nature of COVID-19 has created a state of confusion for many travelers seeking to once again break away from the monotony of day-to-day life and the new normal the world has settled into. Throughout the pandemic, Mexico has remained a place of escape for people all over the world, and especially those from the United States, owing largely to the close proximity and ease of crossing the border for U.S. citizens into Mexico. However, as mentioned before, the state of things does continue to change so many people are left wondering if traveling to Mexico is allowed right now.
The Short Answer is Yes
For U.S. citizens, health officials do recommend that any travel be delayed until you’re fully vaccinated and boosted, although it is not required for traveling to Mexico. As has been the case throughout most of the pandemic, Mexico’s borders are open to travelers from most countries, including the U.S. Furthermore, you don’t have to provide a negative PCR test or quarantine once you arrive, nor the previously required health declaration form. Be aware that most of the resorts do ask their guests to complete a health questionnaire. If you do believe you may be getting sick, find the Sanidad Internacional health organization for assistance.
It is important to note that individual states and cities in Mexico can have more restrictions than Mexico does on a national level. It is best to confirm restrictions with the hotels or resorts you will be staying at before traveling. Also, Mexico does ask that travelers follow COVID-19 precautions, although it is not federally mandated. This means wearing masks when you’re in public places and social distancing as much as possible.
In a big boost to Mexico’s tourism industry, the U.S. no longer requires travelers to provide a negative COVID-19 test to enter the country. Why is this a boost to Mexico’s tourism? Because U.S. citizens comprise a significant amount of Mexico’s tourists. Travelers returning to the U.S. from Mexico will need to follow all other normal requirements to re-enter the country.
